Ingredients

Dough:

  • Corn flour: 250 g
  • Water: 500 ml
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Olive oil: 1 tablespoon

Filling:

  • Smoked chicken breast: 100 g
  • Red onion: 1
  • Avocado: 2
  • Mayonnaise: 2 tablespoons
  • Piri-piri sauce: 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh cilantro: 2 tablespoons
  • Lime: 1
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Preparation

Step 1: Prepare the Arepas

  1. Mix the corn flour, water, salt, and olive oil in a bowl. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to allow the corn flour to absorb the water.
  2. Knead the dough briefly until smooth, then divide it into 8 equal parts.
  3. Roll each part into a ball, then gently flatten each ball into a disk.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly oil it. Cook the arepas for about 5 minutes on each side until golden and slightly crispy.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. Shred the smoked chicken breast using a fork and place it in a bowl.
  2. Finely chop the red onion and add it to the bowl.
  3. Scoop out the avocado flesh, mash it, and add it to the bowl with the chicken and onion.
  4. Add the mayonnaise, piri-piri sauce, and chopped fresh cilantro to the mixture.
  5. Squeeze the lime juice over the mixture and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Mix everything until well combined.

Step 3: Assemble the Arepas

  1. Slice the arepas halfway through to create a pocket.
  2. Fill each arepa with the prepared chicken and avocado mixture.
  3. Serve immediately and enjoy your arepas with chicken and avocado spread.
