Want to try a French-style lunch? Croque Monsieur may surprise you. The ingredients are common and available, and the dish will be filling.
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of bread (white or wholemeal)
- 4 slices of ham
- 1 cup of grated gruyère or emmental cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 cup of milk
- salt and pepper to taste
- dijon mustard (optional)
Method of making:
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
Place two slices of bread on a baking sheet. Top each slice with a slice of ham and some grated cheese.
Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the remaining two slices of bread (if using) and place on top of the ham and cheese to make sandwiches.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a paste (roux).
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and thickened, then season to taste with salt and pepper.
Pour the sauce evenly over the sandwiches, making sure to cover them completely.
Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the sandwiches are heated through.
