Halushki is a hearty and comforting dish that originated in Central and Eastern Europe. It’s a simple but tasty dish that combines bacon, onion, cabbage and egg noodles. The ingredients are sautéed and mixed together to create a delicious blend of flavours. It’s perfect for a quick dinner or a hot lunch on a cold day.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound bacon
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 (16 oz) package egg noodles
- 1 head of cabbage, sliced
- salt and black pepper to taste
Method of preparation:
Cook the bacon in a large, deep skillet over medium heat until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Remove the bacon, crumble and drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper. Reserve a small amount of the bacon drippings in the pan.
Cook and stir the onion in the reserved bacon drippings until lightly browned, about 10 minutes.
Stir in the cabbage and cook and stir until wilted and lightly browned, about 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Cook the egg pasta in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until cooked but still firm to the bite, about 5 minutes. Drain well.
Stir the drained pasta and crumbled bacon into the frying pan with the cabbage and onion. Season to taste with salt and black pepper and serve.
