Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp. orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 loaf french bread (about 1 pound, sliced into 1″ pieces)
  • 4 tbsp. butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Method of preparation:

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved in the butter. Pour this mixture into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.

Arrange the bread slices in a single layer on top of the sugar and butter mixture.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, half and half, vanilla extract, orange juice, nutmeg and salt. Pour this mixture over the bread in the baking tin, making sure that all the bread is soaked. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

The next morning, preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F). Uncover the tin and bake for 35-40 minutes, until the toast is puffed up and lightly golden.

Allow the toast to cool for a few minutes before serving. The sugar and butter mixture will have caramelised on the bottom, giving the dish a crème brûlée effect.
