The cryptocurrency with the biggest rise in 2021 —among the top 15 with the largest market capitalization— is Polygon (MATIC) which grew 12278.73%, according to data from CoinMarketCap. It is a token associated with the Layer 2 project on the Ethereum network, a protocol and a framework for building and connecting Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks and it aims to provide scalable solutions on Ethereum supporting a multi-chain Ethereum ecosystem.

The second fastest-growing cryptocurrency so far this year is Terra (LUNA), a public blockchain protocol deploying a suite of algorithmic decentralized stablecoins which underpin a thriving ecosystem that brings DeFi to the masses. Terra uses stablecoins linked to fiat currencies in order to power price-stable global payment systems and it´s up 9723.87%.

With a rise of 9336.97%, Solana (SOL) is positioned as one of the fastest growing cryptocurrencies this year. Behind it is an open source project that uses blockchain technology to provide decentralised financial solutions. It aims to improve scalability and runs on proof-of-stake consensus.

Dogecoin (DOGE) and Avalanche (AVAX) are up 2871.26% and 2198.87%, respectively. The former is a peer-to-peer and open source digital currency, derived from Litecoin and meme-based. The latter is an open, programmable smart contracts platform for launching decentralised finance applications and is the fastest smart contracts platform in the blockchain industry, as measured by time-to-finality

Binance Coin (BNB), the cryptocurrency of the Binance exchange, grew by 1401.23% this year. Cardano (ADA), a proof-of-stake blockchain platform that says its goal is to allow “changemakers, innovators and visionaries” to bring about positive global change, is up 621.93%. This cryptocurrency is made up of an open-source blockchain and is a platform for executing smart contracts.

Ethereum (ETH) is up 454.21%, it is the second largest cryptocurrency in market capitalization and operates as a decentralised open-source platform that allows users to develop smart contracts, applications, and crypto assets. In turn, XRP (XRP) and Polkadot (DOT) rose respectively, 252.22% and 229.33%.Finally, Bitcoin (BTC) is up 64.69% so far this year. The cryptocurrency with the largest market capitalization reached a new all-time high this 2021 and traded close to US$70,000.
