Today's rock lyrics may be more "meaningful" than those of old, but will they be as memorable?

Somewhere, I've heard the word nirvana defined as the ideal state of freedom from the worries of the everyday world. My friend, Charlie, doesn't agree. He says nirvana is where the winner on "Wheel of Fortune" gets to stand.

I've never approached nirvana in either sense, but when my wife and I watch "Wheel of Fortune," we rise above the worries of the world. It's a game show about words, and since words are my profession, I take a tax deduction every time I watch it.

One night, we were trying to keep ahead of the contestants. A five-word puzzle came up in the "quotation" category. As soon as N, T, S, and D were filled in, my wife solved the puzzle.

"That's easy," she said. "It's |Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats.'"

Naturally, she turned out to be right, and had she been on the show, she'd have won more than $6,000. It pays to gather culture as you're growing up.

We both remembered "Mairzy Doats" from our teen years. On the surface, it was a nonsense song, but it did have something to say, after all. When you spoke the words with the right enunciation and the right cadence, you realized it really said, "Mares eat oats, and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy." It was comforting to take facts like those with you when you left the farm to go overseas and fight a war.

When the song hit the top of the charts back in the '40s, nearly everyone thought it was cute. Nobody thought of playing the record backward to see if it was hiding a satanic message. The world of holocaust and heroism had enough such messages, so when it came to music, folks found relief in "Mairzy Doats," or they sang along as Spike Jones delivered a raucous raspberry "right in der Fuhrer's face."

Well, as soon as the "Wheel" contestant bought a couple of vowels and filled in the Z's, he solved the puzzle.

My wife was amazed. "He's too young," she said. "How could he remember Mairzy Doats'?"

"Nobody's too young for that song," I said. "No matter when you hear those lyrics, they stick with you."

Emcee Pat Sajak awarded the winner his 6,000 bucks. Then Pat, in a cheerful ad lib, hinted that the generation gap isn't as broad as most people think. He said the song title from 50 years ago was just as silly as the rock-|n'-roll lyrics of today.

My wife scoffed at that suggestion. "Can you imagine Michael Jackson and Madonna caressing their own carcasses and gyrating to |Mairzy Doats'?"

Yes," I said. "I'd understand the words, but I still wouldn't make sense of Michael or Madonna."

"Popular songs were fun in those days," she said. "The social messages were less serious."

"|Praise the Lord,'" I quoted. "|and pass the ammunition.'"

We agreed that today's rock lyrics are more meaningful, helping kids to deal with the vital problems of life: how to commit mayhem against women, how to kill police officers, and how to sniff drugs and use condoms without feeling guilty.

"That's education for the 21st century," she said.

"Maybe," I said. "But when the year 2020 rolls around, who's going to remember any lyrics from Michael Jackson or Madonna, or Ice-T?"

"Not many," she said. "They'll outgrow such stuff."

"But I'll bet they and their kids will still know that little lambs eat ivy and a kid'll eat ivy too."

"Wouldn't you?" she said.
