STEPHENIE MEYER is author of Twilight, a best-selling hit in the US, which tells the thrilling tale of a vampire romance at high school.

How was high school for you?

It wasn't too torturous. I had a little niche with the advanced students and an eclectic, warm circle of friends. I was very shy, so I was quiet in class and made no waves. English and art were my favourite subjects.

The relationship between Edward, a vampire, and Bella, a human, is pretty "awkward". Did you have many mismatched, awkward relationships to draw upon?

No. I didn't date very much at all in high school. When I got to college, most of my relationships were light-hearted and very brief. It was a joke with my room-mates that I never dated anyone longer than two weeks unless I was engaged to him. I think I drew on the unrequited, secret crushes I hid in high school more than anything.

Why are people fascinated with vampires?

My personal theory is that, more than other monsters, vampires fascinate humans because of their double nature. Not only do they frighten us but they also attract us. Most of the other monsters we like to scare ourselves with are traditionally ugly and repulsive (zombies, blobs, giant spiders) but vampires, on the other hand, have many attributes we envy: they are beautiful, they are eternally young, they are strong, they are intelligent and wellspoken, they often dress better than we do and they sometimes even live in castles. The sophisticated vampire poses the question: Is it worth it to be evil if you can have everything you want?

What's the best part of being a vampire?

With traditional vampires, for me, it's a toss up between the beauty and the eternal youth. With my particular brand of vampires, my favourite part is never having to sleep. When I think of how much I could get done if I never had to do that . . .

Where did you get the inspiration for this story?

I had a really vivid dream of the scene in the meadow [chapter 13, in the book]. When I woke from the dream, I was so interested in these people - the beautiful, sparkling vampire and the girl with the delicious blood - that I was afraid to forget them. So I wrote my dream down. That took most of the day, and then, that night, I started writing about what happened to them after the dream was over.

Is Edward your ideal man?

He currently holds the title. There are other characters in other stories vying for it, though. My husband thinks that Edward is based on him, so I can get away with saying this.

Why write in the fantasy genre?

I like to live in a world where impossible things can happen. It gives a writer a lot of freedom and so many exciting possibilities.

What act of devotion by a fan has taken you most by surprise?

One enthusiastic fan drove from Long Beach, California, to see me at a signing in Phoenix, Arizona, about a six-hour drive. Not only did she make the drive, she also brought me a giant Hello Kitty doll and, having read up on my obsessions on my website, a CD of my favourite band's B-side recordings. That CD is one of my most valued possessions.

Do you listen to music while you write?

I can't write without music. My very favourite band is Muse, and they are the common denominator in all my MP3 playlists. I listened to a lot of Linkin Park while I was writing Twilight. Right now, my playlist is pretty diverse: Marjorie Fair, The Fray, Elbow, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance, Travis, Beck, The Foo Fighters, Weezer, and so on . . .

What books were you reading when you were a teenager?

I read everything when I was a teenager. I loved Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Orson Scott Card, LM Montgomery, Daphne du Maurier, Anne McCaffrey, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Agatha Christie, Charlotte Bronte, and so many more. I never drew a line between adult and young adult fiction. I read it all.
