Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Chris Tucker each walked away with an award during the recent 2002 MTV Movie Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Washington, who did not attend the ceremony, received a popcorn statue for Best Villain for his role in the critically-acclaimed film Training Day. That same role, as rogue veteran narcotics officer Det. Sgt. Alonzo Harris, also earned Washington an Oscar for Best Actor earlier this year.

Popular actor-rapper Smith received an award for Best Male Performance for his role as boxing legend Muhammad Ali in the film Ali. Earlier this year the celebrated rapper also earned an Oscar nomination for that same role.

Acclaimed comedian-actor Tucker earned an award for Best Fight for his high-energy battle in the action-comedy Rush Hour 2 in which he kicked butt alongside martial arts star Jackie Chan. Tucker, who has become increasingly noted for his humanitarian efforts, had just returned to the states from a four-nation, 10-day African fact-finding mission to witness the effects of aid money (see page 41).
